TEST DAY INFORMATION

Skate Canada has developed a series of tests for skaters to work towards in a progression from beginner to the GOLD level. There are four categories: Skills / Free Skate / Dance / Interpretive. Skaters who have completed all tests in any one category are considered “Skate Canada GOLD TEST MEDALIST” for that category.

HOW ARE THE SKATERS EVALUATED?

A Skate Canada evaluator will visit the club on the designated ‘test day’. These people are VOLUNTEERS who love skating and have undergone extensive training to ensure knowledge of the passing standards. They have been trained to provide a positive experience for the skaters. After you skater has completed the test, they will be given the test paper showing the results. These results are also recorded by the test chairperson and sent to Skate Canada office to be recorded. Please keep your skater’s copy of the test paper on file at home just in case!

WHEN IS YOUR SKATER READY TO BE TESTED?

The Professional Coaches will advise you if your skater is ready to try a test. The Coach will provide your skater with a ‘test envelope’ in which to submit the test fee. This fee is charged by Skate Canada and must be paid in advance in order for your skater to participate in the test. There is also a food donation included to help cover the cost of mileage/food for the evaluator(s). If your skater fails to show up for test day for any reason other than medical, the test will be reported to Skate Canada as a ‘re-try’ and the test fee is not refundable. Please remember to put your skater’s Skate Canada number on the envelope to ensure that they receive credit for the test. If this envelope is not handed in before the test, then the skater will not be allowed on the ice to try the test.

WHAT TO DO ON THE TEST DAY?

  • can help your skate plan their attire for the occasion. They should treat this test day as a PERFORMANCE and dress in a neat and tidy fashion. Skates should also be cleaned. Your coach will advise as to an appropriate outfit for the test.
  • Plan to arrive 45 minutes before the scheduled time. This will give enough time for the skater to warm-up off the ice and to prepare mentally for the test. If the test day is running ahead of time then your skater can be prepared.
  • While in attendance at the test day, please bear in mind that tests require concentration so therefore observers must be quiet. Spectators should sit in the stands and not loiter around the boards as this could distract the skater.
  • The skater will perform for the Evaluator. This Evaluator will note the results and make comments on the test sheet. Once the Test Chair has recorded the result, this test sheet will be handed to the skater. These test sheets should be kept on file at home in case needed in the future.
